I don't have anything to say about this pix. It speaks for itself.

Finally a rain storm.

Estrella Mountains Rain Storm

Mother Nature brought our first winter storm to the valley. A bit of rain and plenty of gusty wind into the Salt River Valley.

SRP electricity was down for most of the night. Rather nice to awaken to the greying sky and local roosters rather than an alarm clock. Shouldn't we all keep schedule by the sun?

Working toward sitting in a full lotus Position.

I will be the first to admit that I am as flexible as on old oak tree. I have never been able to sit in the full lotus position. Most of the time, the Burmese position causes my right leg to fall asleep. Sokai at the Haku-un-ji Zen Center in Tempe recently posted a dhamma talk relating to sitting position. He, among other, note that a full lotus will help keep your body still while you sit. I decided to find some instructions for limbering up my knees and hips. Yoga should do the trick.

The best instructions I have found so for are here. Your mileage may vary. You only have two knees, please be careful. Learn the difference between discomfort and pain. I'll post some progress reports.

South Mountain Signpost.

National Trail South Mountain Park sign

At the junction of the Holbert & National trails in South Moutain Park is a rather unique signpost. Plenty of mountain bike riders seem to use the National Trail. The trail is steep and rather rocky in sections. I am always impressed how folks can ride over desert mountain terrain. Without exception the riders are always exceedingly polite. No whinners allowed on the National Trail as you must “Ride hard or go Home”.

The slogan on the signpost reminds me of a piece of urban artwork in Marietta, GA on the east side of I-75. That read “Get Away Clean”. The owners long ago tore down the wooden slat fence and replaced it with cyclone wire. Too bad.

Anscombe's quartet and Morton's Fork

Came across an interesting brace of trivia last month in my reading.

Both from Wikipedia: Anscombe's Quartet

Anscombe's quartet comprises four datasets that have identical simple statistical properties, yet appear very different when graphed. Each dataset consists of eleven (x,y) points. They were constructed in 1973 by the statistician F.J. Anscombe to demonstrate both the importance of graphing data before analyzing it and the effect of outliers on statistical properties.

Morton's Fork

A Morton's Fork is a choice between two equally unpleasant alternatives (in other words, a dilemma), or two lines of reasoning that lead to the same unpleasant conclusion.

Extra points if you can use both in a sentence today.

Mailbox cowboys.

Laveen cowboy mailbox pix

A mailbox on Olney Ave just west of 51st Ave has some rather unique artwork. The images of three cow pokes fit well with Laveen's farming/ranching history. The fields just south of Olney still are being used to raise cotton and alfalfa.

Phoenix continues to expand toward the SW and surround most of the “town” of Laveen. The 202 freeway extension should enable Phoenix to finally “own” all of Laveen. The two larger dairies that once stood on the “little hill”on the south side of 51st Ave and Baseline are long gone.
